You will be able to
journey in water that is no more than 200 metres from the shore and up
to force 3 winds.
In
order to have an enjoyable day out on the water we need to make some
key decisions to ensure we are in the right place at the right time. You
will consider the weather, wind and water conditions. As these, along with any waterway restrictions, may affect where and when we paddle. In addition, you will consider the personal protective equipment available and choose the most suitable to keep you safe on the water.
What is involved?
When
paddling SUP you need to be in control. This award will develop a range
of skills and knowledge to get you safely through your journey. Balance
and control of the board is important. You will learn the correct feet,
body positioning and strokes required to keep you balanced. This can be
whilst moving forwards or whilst steering the board. Your Coach will
also ask you to consider how you could adapt your plans if needed should
conditions on the water change. You will also need to know how to
rescue yourself or another paddler using a SUP should they, or you, get
into difficulty.
At
the end of each trip, you and your Coach will consider where you need
to go next. This will be tailored around you and dictated by your own
personal goals. You will consider ways in which you can gain more
information to use in your post-trip assessment, such as watching other
paddlers or perhaps using video to analyse your technique.
Each
day we spend SUP paddling we further expand our skills and knowledge.
In SUP, steady, more gradual development is encouraged, which creates a
more enjoyable experience on the water. With no two trips ever the same,
we never stop learning. Continually evaluating the choices we make
creates a natural evolution of decision making ability and skills.
Course
Course
Course
Discover Award Journey Trip to experience a different venue and go on a journey.
On Sunday the 5th of June, we will be paddling part of the Leeds Liverpool Canal from Adlington to Botany Bay and back. There is a small public car park just off the lane to the right of the pub.
Here we will offload boats and equipment from cars and once changed we will shuttle all the cars, with only the driver, to the end point at Trevor Basin Visitor Centre LL20 7YQ then get the drivers back to the start in the smallest number of cars possible. Approx.15 minute drive each way. Preload sat navs. to save time.
At the end of the trip we will have to reunite the shuttle drivers with their cars.
As always, the fewer cars we take, the simpler the shuttle.

Anyone under 18 will need to be accompanied by a responsible adult who will need to stay fairly local and provide their mobile number for emergency contact.
As it is a canal it is possible to accompany us by walking along the towpath should you wish to?
You will need a bright head torch for the tunnels. The Chirk Tunnel isn't called "The Darkie" for nothing.

As with all canals you will need a licence to paddle them. If you’re a member of British Canoeing you’re already covered but remember to bring your card. If not a licence from the Canal & River Trust is required for which we will need to charge you £5.00 per boat which is in addition to your kit and boat fees.
Make sure you bring enough food, drink and snacks for your lunch and to sustain you through the day.

Please could you email events@boltoncanoeclub.org.uk
to book your spot as soon as possible?
As soon as we know who is interested in coming we can then arrange boat and kit requirements as necessary for collection at High Rid the week before the trip. The usual fees will apply.
This is usually a very popular trip and we may have to allocate boats and equipment on a first come first served basis so book early.
Hopefully most of you will be able to transport your own boat and kit but for those who can’t we will have a limited ability to help out.
Keep your eye on the weather forecast and dress appropriately for the day.
For those who are interested in camping for the Friday, Saturday nights or both and as our usual campsite is fully booked I have found an alternative called James Estate Caravan Park just off the A 483.
There are a few pubs nearby and even a Curry House that may be worth exploring.
Please book and pay directly with the campsite, contact details as below, and say you are with Bolton Canoe Club. Prices should be about £19.00 per night.
